Arabica or robusta for commercial coffee machines

If you’re a coffee lover or a business owner looking to invest in commercial coffee machines, it’s essential to understand the difference between arabica and robusta coffee beans. Arabica and robusta are the two main species of coffee beans that are commonly used in the production of coffee beverages. In this blog, we’ll delve into the differences between these two types of coffee beans, and how they can impact your coffee experience when using commercial coffee machines available at Top Vending in South Africa.

Arabica Coffee Beans:

Arabica coffee beans are known for their delicate and nuanced flavours, making them a preferred choice for specialty coffee. They are typically grown at higher altitudes in regions with cooler climates, such as Central and South America, Africa, and some parts of Asia. Arabica coffee beans have a mild and smooth taste profile with notes of sweetness, acidity, and complexity. They generally have a lower caffeine content, ranging from 1-1.7%, compared to robusta coffee beans.

Robusta Coffee Beans:

Robusta coffee beans, as the name suggests, are known for their robust and bold flavours. They are typically grown at lower altitudes in regions with warmer climates, such as Africa, Southeast Asia, and Brazil. Robusta coffee beans have a more bitter and earthy taste profile with less acidity and complexity compared to arabica beans. They generally have a higher caffeine content, ranging from 2-2.7%, which gives them a stronger and more potent caffeine kick.

Liberica Coffee Beans:

Liberica coffee beans are a very rare variety of coffee beans that are native to West and Central Africa. They have a smooth and nutty flavor with a slight hint of fruitiness, and many coffee fans often describe them as being sweet and robust. The caffeine content in Liberica coffee beans is also lower than other varieties of coffee, about 1.23%.

Differences in Commercial Coffee Machines:

The type of coffee beans used can have a significant impact on the performance of commercial coffee machines, including those available at Top Vending in South Africa. Here are some key differences in how arabica and robusta beans can affect commercial coffee machines:

  1. Grinding: Arabica coffee beans are generally softer and have a more delicate structure compared to robusta beans. This can affect the grinding process in commercial coffee machines, as arabica beans may require a finer grind to extract the desired flavours fully. On the other hand, robusta beans may require a coarser grind to prevent over-extraction, which can result in a bitter taste.
  2. Extraction: The brewing process in commercial coffee machines relies on extracting flavours from the coffee grounds. Due to their different taste profiles, arabica and robusta beans may require different brewing parameters, such as water temperature and brewing time. Arabica beans may benefit from lower water temperatures and longer extraction times to bring out their complex flavours, while robusta beans may require higher water temperatures and shorter extraction times to extract their bold flavours without producing bitterness.
  3. Maintenance: The different physical properties of arabica and robusta beans can also impact the maintenance of commercial coffee machines. Arabica beans tend to produce less oil during the brewing process, which can result in less residue and clogging in the machine. On the other hand, robusta beans can produce more oil, which may require more frequent cleaning and maintenance of the coffee machine.
  4. Flavour profiles: The type of coffee beans used can significantly impact the flavour profiles of the brewed coffee. Arabica beans tend to produce a smoother and more nuanced cup with notes of sweetness, acidity, and complexity, which can be appreciated by those who enjoy a more refined taste. Robusta beans, on the other hand, produce a stronger and more bitter cup with less acidity and complexity, which may appeal to those who prefer a bold and robust taste.

In conclusion, understanding the differences between arabica and robusta coffee beans is crucial when using commercial coffee machines, including those available at Top Vending in South Africa. The type of coffee beans used can impact the grinding, extraction, maintenance, and flavour profiles of the brewed coffee.

Business

Renting vs. Buying

In today’s economic climate coupled with the negative impact that COVID and load shedding has had on companies in the past two and a half years, business owners and procurement managers are finding themselves in situations where cost saving has become more important than ever.

As vending machines have gained popularity in the workspace, more and more offices are looking to introduce convenient ways for staff to stay alert and refreshed. When buying a vending machine, you are generally looking at costs starting at around R 87 000,00   Higher end vending machine models can cost as much as R 143 750,00 which makes them a sizeable investment for businesses and some companies just don’t have this kind of capital readily available.

With this in mind, Top Vending, South Africa’s leading supplier of vending machines and related vending solution products understands the importance of providing their customers with both the rental and purchasing option. Shane Terblanche, Technical Production and Operations Manager for Top Vending talks about the differences between renting and purchasing.

RENTING

Maintenance and servicing

One of the biggest advantages of renting a vending machine is that the maintenance and servicing is taken care of by the vending solutions supplier. Most vending companies have a technical service team available which they will dispatch should the customer run into any problems. At Top Vending, we understand the importance of minimising downtime and so we are dedicated to providing a 24-48 hour turnaround time. Top Vending’s in-house rentals covers all travel, labour, and spare parts.

Low investment

An obvious benefit of renting is the low investment required. This in turn means that the customer can make a higher return on the product sold. Our model at Top Vending is different from other vending companies in South Africa in that we are product independent. So even if a customer is renting a vending machine from us, there is no requirement for them to use a specific brand. This goes for all our units from snack vending machine to hot beverage solutions. This allows them to choose the products that will enable them to earn the most margin.

BUYING

No contract

When buying a vending machine, you have complete ownership. You are not tied down to a monthly contract nor are you paying interest charges. However, one needs to consider the cost of servicing and maintaining the vending machine. In this case, it would be a good idea for the business to take out a maintenance contract.

Complete control

Although Top Vending promotes a product independence model, other vending companies might not, and this makes purchasing a vending machine a more attractive option. It allows the owner to control the products and merchandise that they place in the vending machine as well as the cost that they would like to sell them at.

At Top Vending, we offer numerous leasing and purchasing options with the view of customising a solution to businesses of all shapes and sizes. Having been in the vending machine industry for over 25 years, we can help you make the best decision for your organisation. In addition to new vending units, Top Vending also supplies refurbished vending machines for businesses who are looking to reduce their capital outlay.

Water Dispensers

Is the water you are drinking safe?

Top Coolers unpacks the importance of drinking filtered water through water dispensers.

Every day you head to the water dispenser, fill your glass water bottle and drink without giving much thought to the quality of the water you are ingesting. Water purification machines and water filtration have come a long way over the past couple of years, but it is a highly complicated process.

While there is much debate around the difference between point-of-use (POU) water cooler dispensers versus bottled water solutions (BW), Shane Terblanche from Top Coolers, the exclusive distributors of a premium range of water dispenser innovations manufactured by Waterlogic, discusses these differences and how they impact the quality of the water you are drinking.

“Although there are many differentiators between the two, the biggest factor is the high-performance the BioCote© protection,” explains Terblanche. “The built-in BioCote© antimicrobial protection inhibits the growth of microorganisms by using silver ion technology that prevents the development of odour-causing bacteria and mould on the water dispenser area and filter.”

This advanced technology guarantees an endless supply of safe great-tasting quality water. “Furthermore, Firewall® technology provides the world’s highest standard of water purification. This is achieved through a unique double-helix spiral which allows water to flow from top to bottom and back, exposing the water to UVC radiations for much longer than conventional UV solutions,” adds Terblanche.

Firewall® is also the only water purification system certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 55 Class A, NSF P231 Protocol for Microbiological Water Purifiers, US EPA Guide Standard, NSF/ANSI 372 for lead-free compliance, and CSA B483.1. No other water dispenser features this standard of certification or provides this quality of filtered water.

“Preserving the health integrity of the workplace is hugely important to us at Top Coolers but ensuring a bright future for the environment is equally so. What makes a POU water dispenser machine so unique is the fact that it has zero environmental impact. This is because there is no need for BPA plastic bottles that end up on the landfill, nor are there emissions from the transport and chemical cleaning of these bottles,” explains Terblanche.

The risk of not using filtered water is that it will be unsterilised and untreated meaning that the quality of the water will be compromised and could contain dangerous microorganisms such as Giardia lamblia, cryptosporidium, and Vibrio cholera, which could lead to several health issues and complications, such as diarrhea, sepsis, cholera, and in extreme cases, death. Crumbling infrastructure, leaks in pipelines and damaged valves, and failing pump stations can introduce a variety of these contaminations.

Using a water dispenser that contains Firewall® mitigates the risk of ingesting this harmful bacteria, parasites, and viruses.

Some of our Firewall® water coolers include the WL7 Firewall® water dispenser, the Waterlogic WL2 water cooler, and, the Kastella™ Bar Classe.  All of these water coolers purify water to the point of dispensing to provide quality filtered water. This range caters to all applications and venues such as boardrooms, pause areas, hotels, and restaurants. Depending on the water dispenser, a selection of cold, ambient, sparkling, hot, and extra hot are on offer.

Top Coolers does not believe in a one-size fits all approach, instead, we undertake to understand the requirements of our customer’s business so that we can offer them a bespoke, carefully thought-out water solution that meets their needs.

As the exclusive partner for Waterlogic’s water filtration systems in Southern Africa, Top Coolers is proud to offer our customers pure and safe water dispenser solutions, designed to fit stylishly in any office space for rental or purchase.
